weekly wrap up with the books

weekly wrap up with the books

It’s been a very, very long time since I’ve taken the time to do a simple weekly wrap-up. This wrap-up is the one with all the books. It’s also the one where are finding our groove, chasing minimalism, and reading all-the-things. . .

We took an early Christmas break back in December and started our school year back up on January 16th, when Catie’s college classes started back up again. I really enjoyed the family time we had during the first half of January, it was really nice. So now we just wrapped up our second week of school after taking about a month off. It’s been… interesting.

Around the House: Purge, purge, purge!

In December I started a major purge. We got quite a bit done before Christmas and a little bit more in the first half of January. Now that we are trying to do school during the day, too, it’s harder to get “extra” stuff done, but we are still chipping away at it. I have this driving urge to become a minimalist. Actually, no, but I do have this driving urge to be able to find what I want when I want it. SO.

I have this new philosophy,. . . call it my “Amazon Box Principle” if you will. Every Amazon box that comes in to the house (and they come in regularly) is a box that can be filled and taken to the thrift store.

So I’ve been working on that.

Getting the house decluttered one Amazon box at a time. . .

Also this week, we got the Christmas tree put away! Don’t judge me… 😉 And in what can only be called a Christmas tree miracle, we actually got it back into the original box without any bulging or breaking of the box. Woot, woot!

In the Kitchen… Let there be bread. (Or not.)

Monday I went completely Gluten Free again.

Last June I found that I feel a lot better when I don’t eat gluten. A few Thanksgiving exceptions quickly slid into a full track-derailment by the time we got to Christmas. I’ve been feeling lousy again, so I’m back on the GF wagon now. I usually buy Udi’s GF bread for toast but I’ve purchased ingredients to try my hand at making bread myself. I’ll try that tomorrow and let you know how it turns out. 😉

In Our School: All the books

School this week has been a bit of a challenge. Not only are we still trying to get back into our routine but I had a terrible sinus migraine for three days. We have done our math (Life of Fred) and some necessary things (By Design Science,) but we spent a lot of time watching documentaries and reading.

Speaking of reading! This has been a very BOOK-FILLED WEEK.

Last Thursday, Arielle picked up our copy of Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 1. She read the whole thing in one sitting. On Friday, I rented books 2 and 3 from our library. On Monday, I rented books 4 and 5. On Wednesday, she was begging for MORE.

**SHE READ FIVE BOOKS IN SIX DAYS!**

Our library doesn’t have Book 6 in stock, and they don’t have some of the rest of the thirteen books either. So yesterday I ordered six of them from Thriftbooks.com for less than $20. They will be here in 1-2 weeks.

Meanwhile, Arielle needs something else to read so I picked up several potentially interesting books at the library (including A Wrinkle in Time.) She selected the first book in the Sisters Grimm series and she’s well into it already.

Arielle isn’t the only one who has been reading. Buddy decided he would give the Series of Unfortunate Events a second try so he’s reading the first book now. I also picked up a copy of Go Set a Watchman while I was out shopping. This we also ready another abridged Shakespeare play (Hamlet) and we picked up our read-aloud where we left off before the holidays. We read quite a bit of Holes together and we are getting really close to the end! We’ll be having a Book and Movie night soon!

I’m not complaining of course… I do love watching my kids read, especially when they haven’t shown as much of an interest before. =)

Until Next Time…

All in all, it was a pretty good week. I’ve got high hopes for next week, too. Getting back into a routine is usually easier by the third week, and I’ve got a plan to help. 😉

Hey, y’all! I’m Amber and I wear many hats. I drink a ton of coffee and I’m constantly sweeping crumbs off the floor. After 18 years of homeschooling, I’m getting close to graduating my third child and now we are starting over at preschool with our fourth, Lil Miss Mouse. She keeps us young and she’s the main reason for my excessive coffee consumption. Drink up!
