My Homeschooling Philosophy

Welcome, new visitor! Come on in. The Classic Housewife is currently undergoing some back end changes. In the meantime I'm re-posting some oldies and goodies. You may also want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!

That’s my number one philosophy - for choosing curriculum, for teaching concepts, for students working problems. Or to quote a favorite little blue fish, “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!” ;)

I’m what you call an eclectic homeschooler - taking various methods and curriculums and molding them together to suit our needs. However, I’m serously considering buying a complete set of curriculum from one publisher for next year. *Gasp!* I know!

But as I said, if at first you don’t succeed…

We’ve been doing just fine so far. But I’ve hit a point (with schooling two children now, and next year the third will be doing a little bit of pre-k work) where I just need the buying, choosing and using of the curriculum to be easy. You know? I don’t need more stuff to think about than I’ve already got on my mind.

I like to keep learning relaxed - everybody gathered around the dining room table. Sometimes curled on the couch for reading, or spread out on the living room floor with math manipulatives. I’m not much into reproducing an identical public school setting. It’s not public school. And I have three different ages instead of one grade level. Why should it look the same?

My kids aren’t the only ones who are learning and being educated. Spending this much time with them is not only teaching me a lot about them but a lot about myself also. In addition to training my children, God is training ME. I’m learning a lot about patience, self-discipline, anger management, forgiveness, and love– just to name a few. It’s certainly not the main goal.. but it’s definitely an unavoidable biproduct.
