My Philosophy on Cooking
Welcome, new visitor! Come on in. The Classic Housewife is currently undergoing some back end changes. In the meantime I'm re-posting some oldies and goodies. You may also want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
The Classic Housewife’s Rules for Cooking
- Keep the menu plan simple. Feel free to try new things, but everybody loves good ole down home cooking.
- Cook what you can from scratch when you can. It’ll taste better, save you money and it’s usually healthier too.
- Make a menu plan. It’ll keep you on track.
- Balance it out - remember the four food groups.
- Generally speaking, aim for 3 servings of milk a day, a protein source at each meal (even yogurt, beans, cheese, etc - not necessarily meat), 5 fruits and veggie servings and whole grains with each meal.
- Learn to use your seasonings to enhance your flavors- go easy on the salt and prepackaged seasoning mixes.
- Make your own snacks. You can make healthier versions of your favorite snack items and save yourself tons of salt, sugar, and calories.
