My Philosophy on Cooking

Welcome, new visitor! Come on in. The Classic Housewife is currently undergoing some back end changes. In the meantime I'm re-posting some oldies and goodies. You may also want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

The Classic Housewife’s Rules for Cooking

  1. Keep the menu plan simple. Feel free to try new things, but everybody loves good ole down home cooking.
  2. Cook what you can from scratch when you can. It’ll taste better, save you money and it’s usually healthier too.
  3. Make a menu plan. It’ll keep you on track.
  4. Balance it out - remember the four food groups.
  5. Generally speaking, aim for 3 servings of milk a day, a protein source at each meal (even yogurt, beans, cheese, etc - not necessarily meat), 5 fruits and veggie servings and whole grains with each meal.
  6. Learn to use your seasonings to enhance your flavors- go easy on the salt and prepackaged seasoning mixes.
  7. Make your own snacks. You can make healthier versions of your favorite snack items and save yourself tons of salt, sugar, and calories.
