Thankful Thursday ~ Winter

Winter. A time for the earth to rest before blooming in spring.
A time to bundle in fuzzy socks and favorite sweatshirts.
Sipping coffee. Or hot chocolate. Or both.
The glow of a fire, or the hum of a space heater nearby.
Indoor fun, board games, movies, crafts.
Paper snowflakes and maybe real ones, too.
Comfort foods and soups and stews.
Cold and gray and dead outside.
Inside, warm and cozy and waiting for spring.
God, how I’m thankful for winter, that every season has it’s purpose, that we have to go through winter to get to spring, but that spring comes after. Thank you for being a faithful God.

A Very Thankful Thursday Tomorrow

ttbuttonYou may or may not regularly participate in Thankful Thursday at Grace Alone, but seeing as how we’re celebrating the biggest thing to be thankful for tomorrow, I encourage you to stop and think a moment and thank God for his wonders and blessings. Thankful Thursday

I’ve got a lot to be thankful for, it’s just that everything I’ve tried to write so far has sounded insincere or cheezy. Truth is, I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.

It’s hard to put it all into words. But sometimes, we don’t have to. Sometimes we can just praise God and thank Him. Just for being God. Just for doing what he does. Sometimes, we can just lift our faces to God and smile.

Thank you God, for the blessings you’ve given, the trials you’ve allowed, the successes you’ve brought, the growth you’ve given. Thank you God, for all that you are and all that you do.

Thankful Thursday ~ “What I’ve Got”

Approaching the holidays, it’s easy to slip out of contentment and into discontent when we see the advertisements telling us what we need and what we should have, displaying all the sparklies and the pretties and the “Oh neats!”

I’m guilty of giving in to these thoughts on occasion. OOh, I’d like this and this and THIS for Christmas this year!” The list grows so long that suddenly, I’m thinking about all the thing I don’t have, have to do without and can’t get.

Truth is, if I could be content without those things before Christmas, I can be content…without those things.

Maybe some of them are even on the “need” list and not the “want” list. But we’ll get to the needs as we get to them. In the mean time, I can thank God for everything I DO have, so that I’m not complaining about what I DON’T.

I have an awful lot to be thankful for!

Thankful Thursday

I’ve been in a funk all week. Not a serious funk. Just a little bit of an unmotivated, imbalanced, life is crazy kind of funk. The problem with that is that you’re (I’m) just looking at the negative stuff.

I’m seeing the messy house, the disobedient children, the inability to concentrate and focus and get things done. Everything just feels “wonky.”

But I read something inspiring late last night (which was good because yesterday evening was particularly bad) so I’m throwing off the funk and donning a positive attitude. For starters, I’m going to take a close look at all the things I have to be thankful for today:

  • Nice weather
  • A new day, a fresh start
  • A husband who loves me
  • 3 great children
  • The opportunity and ability to serve my family
  • Being able to stay home with my kids
  • Homemade goodies in the fridge
  • Fresh coffee
  • Gift-shopping for Little Prince’s 3rd Bday tomorrow.
  • Family & Friends
  • Great music
  • My Savior and my faith
  • The hope of a new day and fresh start tomorrow

How can you have a funky day when you start off like that??

Thankful Thursday - My Middle Child

Middle children get a bad rap for being difficult, and well, mine has been challenging from day one, even before she was a “middle.” Though sweet, she has always been especially stubborn, especially independent and prone to temper tantrums and meltdowns.

But I love her so much!

I am so thankful that God has blessed her with a mind of her own, an independent nature and a tenacity to take a stand for what she believes in. Right now she might be taking a stand for extra dessert (and losing) but imagine what she might accomplish with that later in life!

I’m so thankful that God has used raising her to teach me many things as well.

  1. To see the blessings in everything that makes her difficult right now.
  2. To impress me with the importance of training her up in the way she should go.
  3. To teach me patience and gentleness and persistence.
  4. To show me more about God’s nature. (I imagine I am often like a difficult child, too.)

God is so good! All the time.

Thankful Thursday - Help With The Hard Days

Today, Iris’ scripture reference is Matthew 11:28-30.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

What a perfect reminder for me today. Today has been a difficult day. But GO TO HIM. HE WILL GIVE REST.

Thankful Thursday - Protection

Today I am so very thankful for protection and providence in the midst of fear and trembling.

I’d like to share a portion of my favorite scripture passage, Psalm 18. It’s always hard for me to take an excerpt, because I love the whole thing. But the whole thing is rather long.

Psalm 18: 1-6

I love you, O LORD, my strength.

The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies

The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of destruction assailed me;
the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called upon the LORD;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.

Thankful Thursday - My Children

I’ve been thinking about my children a lot lately, about how I’m not only teaching them, but how God is teaching me through them. He teaches me about patience, love, sacrifice, mercy, pride, trust, faith, sin, joy… I’m sure there is even more than that.

  • God thank you for my children, each unique and wonderful in their individual ways.
  • Thank you for my Princess who teaches me about compassion and loving life.
  • Thank you for my Drama Queen who teaches me about patience and adventure.
  • Thank you for my Little Prince who teaches me about providence and joy.
  • Thank you, God, for showing me the blessings of children, the joys of motherhood, and the wonder of life.
  • Thank you, God, for revealing to me that teaching them is more about you teaching my spirit than it is about me teaching them through books.
  • Thank you for also teaching me that teaching them is more about training them in character and teaching them about You.
  • Thank you for drawing Princess to you as your child, and I pray you’ll do the same for the other two.
  • Thank you, God, for every blessing.

Thankful Thursday - Visiting Family

We had a great time visiting my family over the weekend! I still miss my mom living so closely, but I’m so happy for her that they are doing so well down there. I know that she is right where God wants her. Nonetheless, I look forward to the next visit!!

  • Thank you God for overseeing our steps and leading us in your will.
  • Thank you God for providing through every circumstance, even tough transitions.
  • Thank you God for your amazing grace and blessings!
  • Thank you God for the opportunity to visit with my family and have a good time of fellowship with them.
  • Thank you God for all that you do in our lives, seen and unseen!!

Thankful Thursday - Health

Today I am thankful for health! Though today, I actually don’t feel very well. But I am thankful that while my family has suffered repeatedly over the last two months, I have been spared to take care of them. And I’m thankful that even though I am ill now I am still not so sick that I can’t take care of them at the same time. Mostly, I am thankful that even we get sick, God is there to carry us through! I know that even though I’m not well today, He’s going to sustain me throughout my day. And I’m going to be thankful for health in spite of present sickness, because I know that good health will return.

I’m also thankful for:

  • my husband and three beautiful children, I love them very much
  • my friends who “sharpen” me and keep me accountable
  • the Easter holiday, which serves to remind me of my sin, my need for a savior, and Jesus who bought me with his blood!

GOD. IS. SO. GOOD!

Thankful Thursday - God is Faithful

One of the things God has been proving lately is how faithful He is. Always! He always carries us through, He always provides, He always sustains. When the way seems impossible, when the world gives us nothing, when we can’t see the way out, when we have nowhere left to go - we always have God.

Lamentations 3:21-26 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.

I am so thankful that God is faithful and true. I am so thankful that He always keeps his promises and takes care of His own. God is so good.

Thankful For My Hubby

I have many blessings. My hubby is just one of them. But I am very thankful for him. Not only does he work very hard for us, but this website wouldn’t be here as it is without his help. He’s a very talented and gifted man. And I thank God for giving him to me, and I’m thankful for all the work my hubby has put in.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Thankful Thursday - Look How Far God Has Brought Me

I’ve been contemplating how far I have come in the last two years. Why the last two years? It was two years ago this summer that I was sitting in a ladies bible study thinking about the impending birth of my 3rd child and wondering just in the world how I was going to handle it all. It was in that same bible study that I found my accountability partner that I am meeting with. Looking back, I can say “Yeah, I still have a long way to go, but look how far God has brought me!”

Sometimes I feel as if I’m swimming in circles. I feel like I am struggling through the same issues over and over again and I wonder if I am getting anywhere. It might feel as though I could make a master prayer list and just make a hundred photocopies for the next hundred weeks to come, but as I sat and contemplated that thought this week, I realized that the subject areas might be the same but the prayer requests have evolved. I have evolved. I am further down (or up?) the same stream, but I am not in the same spot.

I don’t say this to pat myself on the back. I haven’t gotten this far on my own. I give all the credit to God. “Look how far GOD has brought me! God is so GOOD!”

Thankful Thursday: Psalm 27

Psalm 27 (ESV)

The LORD Is My Light and My Salvation
Of David.

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me
to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.

3 Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet I will be confident.

4 One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire in his temple.

5 For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will lift me high upon a rock.

6 And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,

I am thankful that with God, I do not need to be afraid.

I am thankful that evildoers will not prevail (not in the end anyway) and that God wins.

I am thankful that I can be confident for God is with me.

I am thankful that I can seek God’s presence, and find it, and dwell in Him.

I am thankful that God is a good God.

I am thankful that God will provide shelter and protection. I am thankful that I can feel safe in God.

I am thankful that I am able to praise God, and sing and shout praises to His name!

I am thankful that God is worthy of praise!

I am thankful that God hears me when I cry out to Him, and I am thankful that he answers.

I am thankful that God has called me to Himself, so that my heart may respond, “Lord, your face do I seek.”

I am thankful that God does not hide from, nor forsake his children. I am thankful that He is faithful.

I am thankful that God teaches me. I am thankful that His ways are better and will lead us down the right paths.

I am thankful that God will not abandon me nor give up on me, but that He will continue the work that He has began in me.

I am thankful that I can look upon His goodness now, even as I look forward to fully understanding His goodness when I meet Him face-to-face.

I am thankful that I can wait on God, knowing that He is trustworthy and will do as He says.

I am thankful that I can have courage in the here and now, with God by my side, until the day comes that He calls me from this earth or returns in all His radiant glory!!
