This week I went to the grocery store armed with sale information, a specific list, and a mission! I didn’t take any coupons because a.) I haven’t bought a paper in a while and b.) the computer that is hooked up to the printer was being worked on.
Oh well.
Next time.
At any rate, I took my info and I marathon shopped through both grocery stores as quick as I could and now my freezer is stuffed (literally!! I couldn’t fit another thing in if I tried,) my fridge is full and my pantry is stocked. And my wallet? Is happy.
I saved over 33 dollars just by shopping the sales items and using my store card! I say “over” because the other store (without a store card) doesn’t tell you how much was saved on the receipt. Kind of a bummer, but I know that I spent only slightly less at the other store and only bought sales items there so I wouldn’t be surprised if my savings was actually double that. Imagine what I could do with coupons.
Anywho… all that to say, that is definitely going to affect our menu for the week, because (for example) Sunday night’s supper? Every single item was on sale. OH YEAH. So here goes:
Sunday: “BBQ” sandwiches (with ground beef & bbq sloppy joe sauce), potato chips. Dessert: ice cream.
Monday: Hamburgers, potato salad, watermelon
Tuesday: “Healthier” Chicken fettuccine alfredo, mixed greens salad.
Wednesday: Tacos
Thursday: Spaghetti & meatballs, salad, bread
Friday: Grilled chicken, salad, steamed cauliflower
Saturday: Meatloaf, mac n cheese, salad, ranch beans
For breakfasts: cereal, bagels, english muffins, fruit, cream of wheat, yogurt, eggs, bacon
For lunches: leftovers, sandwiches, nachos, hot dogs, tuna salad
For snacks: fruit, veggies, string cheese, yogurt

This Tuesday is our next produce delivery so we’ll be swimming in fresh fruits and veggies! At the end of the week, I’m visiting my mom so this week’s menu will need to use the more time sensitive produce that we’ll receive so that nothing goes to waste. =)
I need to make a salad with the mizuna and arugula, and some of the green leaf lettuce, the grape tomatoes, mushrooms and cucumbers. I also have some leftover carrots. When I include “salad” on the menu, it’ll be this salad that I’ve pre-made. (Everything I mark with an asterisk is something from our organic co-op!)

Menu Planning is something (when I do it) that keeps me accountable for using the fresh fruits & vegetables we have on hand, makes sure I plan enough fruits & vegetables into each day, provides enough variety on the menu from day to day, and helps me get supper on the table in a timely manner every evening.
That said. I think it’s high time I got back in that habit don’t you think? This week’s menu is centered largely around the produce that we received in last week’s organic produce co-op share, as well as the additional produce items I purchased at the store and the meats that I have on hand in the freezer. This week we’ll be trying one new recipe (the ground turkey soup) and leaning heavily on many of our regular “safe” meals.

Boy, it feels so good to be coming out of week long sickies spell! I finally have some energy to get some things done instead of just trying to get the bare minimum done to keep the house going. One of the first things I did was make a menu and grocery shopping list and head to the store. We’d stretched our pantry and freezer as far as it would go and we were basically OUT of anything that would go together for a meal. Monday’s “menu” isn’t really worth repeating so I’m starting with Tuesday. ;0)

Wednesday

Thursday

- Su- Pork Lo Mein w/bok choy
Friday

- Su- salisbury steaks, crockpot cabbage & potatoes
Saturday
I’m finally getting around to making the pork lo mein! I had forgotten an ingredient on the last grocery shopping trip so I put it off. I didn’t get to make the Chicken Breast A l’Orange (next week) or crockpot cabbage and potatoes either. Apparently I did a horrible job on that last shopping trip and forgot a couple of key ingredients. Oops! But not this time, I got EVERYTHING on my list!! =0) I actually made a menu for the next two weeks (and grocery shopped for it) so next week’s menu plan monday is going to be so easy. And it’s a really good feeling to be so prepared to!
