We don't have any Santa decorations,..but we do have some movies and books. I haven't banished Santa completely, I just removed Santa from our Christmas morning traditions. Santa IS a symbol of secular Christmas, along with Rudolph, snow men, etc. I don't mind watching movies about those things when it's pretend. It's no different than watching other pretend movies. What bothered me, what HAS bothered me all along it's just taken me this long to get to this point, is the kids thinking it's real. Young kids take things very literally and have trouble grasping that movies aren't real anyway. For me to pretend that it's real - to any extent, either by proactively promoting Santa, which I never did, or by passively standing by - only to later tell them that it's all for pretend, just seemed counter-productive, backwards and was very frustrating for me. It also made me not want to watch some of the classic Christmas movies we grew up with because I didn't want to encourage the kids the wrong way. I couldn't enjoy Frosty the Snowman or The Santa Clause because I was so on edge.

It was soo freeing this year, to see Santa at the store or in a movie and not have to worry about my four year old thinking he was the real Santa. It was so freeing to be able to talk about it, about how it was a story, like Batman, to answer questions with the full truth when they were asked. Also, they all knew that I was the stocking stuffer, which we kept because that tradition does relate directly to Saint Nicholas and well, I like the stockings. But next year I'm going to stuff them with more "needed" things because Saint Nicholas gave things that were needed - food, dowries, etc. Good stuffers would be things like pens and pencils, a watch, belts or pretty scarves, etc. I usually stuff mine and James' too, and I've always done stuff like that for ours. I've gotten new makeup or new kitchen spatulas if those were what I needed.

Anyway, it went well, and I think next year will be even better, with us being at home and being able to have a more normal Christmas morning. I'm hoping to also start a new "tradition" of opening gifts one at a time instead of having an opening frenzy. I'd like to be able to pay more attention to who's getting what and who it was from and make sure that person gets thanked, etc. The happy by-product of a tradition like that is that it puts even more emphasis on the giving of the gift instead of just focusing on finding out what's inside of it. ;)

Do you have any Santa decorations? We never introduced Santa as "gift-bringer" to our kids. Now Aaron is old enough and verbal enough to fully understand I want to get my story straight. When I was putting up our decorations I noted I have at least 4 Santa ornaments and a couple of other decorations. Santa is for sure a symbol of the season, I can't decide to banish him or just keep him devoid of "Christmas power" : )
