We haven't had tv for over a year and a half now. Before that I recorded shows onto a DVR that allowed me to edit out commericals and record onto dvds. My favorites are Stanley (Disney Channel), Rolie Polie Olie (cancelled now) and Magic School Bus. I loved Out of the Box, too, before it was cancelled (I only recorded that on VHS though, and it's not going to last much longer). Signing Time on PBS is another one that we have recorded and enjoyed.

Wonderpets and Word World are very popular choices at our house... my daughter (who will be 3 in Feb.) has started reading simple words already and I think that Word World has helped with that quite a bit. Well chosen TV trumps junky kids videos anyday in my opinion! :)

My son LOVES Super Why and has since he was like 6 months old. I thought it was too advanced, but hey he watched it. He could identify and say all the letters of the alphabet by 21 months (lower case took another 2 months). He also loves Sesame Street and that is great for letters, numbers and manners. One new show he likes (that is for sure for older kids) is "Sid the Science Kid". The have on-line resources for that show, too (PBSkids.org). Today we learned about hearing. I know it is not tv, but the "Baby Einstein" videos (I got mine at garage sales) taught my son a ton (including trying to sign the alphabet while he is saying it).
He is only 26 months, but he can read and say all letters and knows what sound they make, count to 20 in english (and identify them), count to 10 in Spanish. I feel these shows played a large part in those accomplishments (and they fact he thought doing those things was fun, so we could reinforce it with toys and puzzles).
