WFMW – Water Conservation
My mom bought this really cool book for me: Home Hints & Tips. It’s plum full of great information for having a healthier home. Ranging from ways to cut down on toxins in your home, to cleaning with natural ingredients, to ways to save on energy, this book is already inspiring me in many ways.
Finding ways to keep a healthier home is something that I’ve been interested in lately – hence, my desire to grow vegetables, make bread, and make soap. I know y’all probably think I’m getting a little cuckoo.
To me, its just one more way to be a good steward of everything God has given me.
I received this book only a few days ago but I’m already pulling some useful information from it. The only reason I thought to collect rainwater to water the plants was because I had been reading this book the other day and recalled its suggestion to do just that.
Did you know? “The average homeowner uses 32-53 gallons (120-200 liters) of water a day but, by being a little more careful, we can reduce this to 21 gallons (81 liters.)” Home Hints & Tips, p. 14
It also has motivated me to be more strict about turning off the faucet while brushing our teeth – something I grew up doing but have been lazy about with my own children. Also I’m going to have the kids keep an eye out for containers we can re-use (half gallon jugs, salsa jars, etc) and have them wash them, fill them and place them in the toilet tanks.
Did you know? “Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth: running water for one minute uses up 3-4 gallons (10-14 liters).” Home Hints & Tips, p.15
There is one thing that I do to help save on water that isn’t in the book: For bath time at night, I fill the tub with a couple of inches and bathe the baby first. Then I add more water to it (instead of draining it) to give Drama Queen a bath. We have a ‘belly button rule’ stating that the water should be filled to the belly button (while sitting) and no higher. We haven’t been sticking to it b/c Drama Queen is going through a phase of practicing holding her breath under water and she keeps begging for more water. I should start reinforcing that rule again. It not only uses less water but it is less messy and safer, too!
Did you know? “In 30 minutes a garden sprinkler uses as much water as a family of four in a day,” Home Hints & Tips, p.14
If you are really concerned about saving water, there are also special water conserving faucets and shower heads (I didn’t know that,) toilets (I did know that,) and water meters for your home to measure how much water you use. A friend of mine purchased a timer for her water hose in her yard. She can attach it to the sprinkler, put it in her garden or in the kiddy pool and turn it on for a set amount of time. It automatically shuts off by itself. How cool is that?
